Metallica can now say they have performed in all seven continents.

The band played in Antarctica today in a small dome at Carlini Station. The station is an Argentine base that was formed in 1953 and currently has the capacity to hold 60 occupants.

In October, the band wrote on their website that:

“After over 30 years as a band, we have been unbelievably fortunate to visit just about every corner of the earth . . . except for one. That is all about to change as we are set travel to Antarctica, the only continent that Metallica has never played on until now!! We are partnering with Coca-Cola Zero for one of the most unique and special concert events in our career as we'll be performing near the heliport of the Argentine Antarctic Base Carlini on Sunday, December 8, 2013.”

The lucky few who attended the once in a lifetime performance entered a contest that was only available to Latin American fans from Argentina, Chile, Mexico, Colombia and Costa Rica. The participants had to state why they were eager to take the trip down there and see them play.

Also in attendance were research station scientists from South Korea, China, Chile, Brazil, Poland, Germany and Russia and ship crew members. There were no reported sightings of penguins during the set.

Metallica’s 10 song set included: “Creeping Death,” “For Whom the Bell Tolls,” “Sad But True,” “Welcome Home (Sanitarium),” “Master of Puppets,” “One,” “Blackened,” “Nothing Else Matters,” “Enter Sandman,” and “Seek & Destroy.”

“The energy in the little dome was amazing! Words can not describe how happy everyone was,” the band wrote on their Facebook page.

The telecast of the set will be on www.coca-cola.tv and www.coca-cola.fm at 11 P.M. local Argentina time and will be available to Latin American countries. Photos of this intimate show is available on the band’s Facebook page.
