ROUBAIX—For their first shows in France on the 2013 Worldwide Tour of Shen Yun Performing Arts, the classical Chinese dance company packed the Le Colisée—Théâtre de Roubaix, on March 16. It’s one of the largest venues in the region.
Among the audience members for the premiere was Denis Lamy, president of a regional association for promotion of arts and culture. This was the first time Mr. Lamy had seen Shen Yun, and he was very impressed by the quality of the performance from every artistic facet.
“As a whole it’s a show of outstanding quality standards. It’s close to perfection,” said Mr. Lamy.
“The different numbers are very well synchronized. You feel a kind of complicity between the artists, be it the musicians, [and] the dancers—they convey messages of strength, generosity, and altruism which are expressed and transmitted [to the audience].”
“There’s a lot of magic [in Shen Yun]. We are submerged into a fairyland with perfect coordination between video and scenery. Everything is coordinated so brilliantly. It really is a very, very high level show.”
From one scene to another and from songs to dances, Mr. Lamy could not help but notice a lot of sensitivity.
Shen Yun is even more than technical perfection, “In a world such as that we live in, [valuing] the individualistic, here are messages of love, generosity, purity which come through. There is a lot of sensitivity, a sensitivity that is transmitted to the audience,” explains Mr. Lamy.
“It is very uncommon to find a show that communicates as many messages in terms of human values,” Mr. Lamy said. “One realizes that there is a universality of values … that shines in each number. Values of helping one another, generosity ... it’s repeated a lot, and also something mystical which makes one reflect on the meaning of life, eternity, [and] of the Creator. It is a word that often comes up— these are messages of tolerance.”
The Shen Yun mission is to revive 5,000 years of ancient Chinese civilization. It is a bridge between East and West and transmits the thousands of years old values of Chinese culture to all audiences.
For Denis Lamy, it’s clear: “I … want to ask as many people as possible to come and see the show—for my part I will be there next year. It is a discovery and a revelation. ”
This discovery continues to Dutch audiences at La Hague on March 19. New York-based Shen Yun will be back in France in April after several performances in Germany, Switzerland, Sweden and the Czech Republic. On April 13 and 14, it will be Parisian audience members who will be able to see the rebirth of traditional Chinese culture at the Palais des Congrès.
