Heavy rain in Shelby County causing problems

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Officials say heavy rains have caused roads to flood in parts of West Tennessee and north Mississippi, leading to the evacuation of homes in a neighborhood.

The National Weather Service estimates that 4 to 6 inches of rain has fallen in Shelby County on Thursday, with northern DeSoto County in Mississippi receiving up to 9 inches. Rain was tapering off Thursday afternoon, but aflood warning is in effect until 4:45 p.m.

Memphis Fire Department Lt. Wayne Cooke says residents were evacuated from homes in a low-lying northMemphis neighborhood. No injuries have been reported.

Officials say standing water has led to road closures, affecting traffic. Shelby County Schools canceled after-school athletic activities due to the flooding concern.

Storms could bring flash floods to east Arkansas

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — Parts of eastern Arkansas are under a flash flood watch as a cold front moves through the state, bringing several rounds of showers and thunderstorms.

The National Weather Service in Memphis, Tennessee, has issued the watch for an area of eastern Arkansas stretching from Clay County southward to Phillips County. The watch includes the cities of Blytheville, Jonesboro, West Memphis and Helena-West Helena.

Forecasters say the watch is in effect through Friday evening.

Showers and thunderstorms are predicted throughout much of Arkansas on Thursday, and forecasters say some areas could see strong winds or large hail. The storms are expected to move out Friday night, followed by cool and dry conditions for the weekend.
