Melanie Martinez performed at Bowery Ballroom in New York City last Thursday to an audience that has already been following her since she appeared in The Voice in 2012 and was part of Team Adam. She made it to the Top 6 before being eliminated in week five.
Before the 19 year-old came out of a dollhouse box, a snippet of an episode of Tom and Jerry appeared on screen before her band came on stage in animal costumes.
Martinez embodied the “doll” persona, with her hair perfectly curled and her dress that showed just enough leg. Although she looked sweet and innocent onstage, her songs provide the sassiness and honesty and occasional profanity one wouldn’t expect from a girl in a dollhouse.
Her setlist consisted of tracks from her Dollhouse EP, including “Carousel,” which has appeared in American Horror Story: Freak Show, “Dollhouse” and “Bittersweet Tragedy.”
She also performed tracks from her upcoming debut full length album including “Alphabet Boy,” “Pacifier,” and “Crybaby” and covered Ariana Grande’s “My Everything,” proving Martinez can shed her tongue in cheek persona once in a while.
New York indie band AJR opened up for Martinez as their setlist consisted of tracks that are lighthearted and fun, perfect for a crowd that were in the teenage and Spongebob fan demographic.
