Russian sports minister Vitaly Mutkov said Tuesday that he is ready to quit over the country’s lackluster performance during the Vancouver Olympics.
The minister reacted to President Dmitry Medvedev’s criticism about “fat cat” sports bureaucrats. Medvedev said Mutkov should resign over the Russian performance in the Winter Games, calling it a fiasco.
Russia’s Olympic team won three gold medals, which constituted the eleventh highest amount earned in the games. This result is the worst ever for the country.
Russia will host the next Winter Olympics Games in Sochi in 2014.
The Moscow Times cited billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov, who said that Russia shouldn’t trash their hockey team over one loss, referring to their defeat at the hands of the Canada team in the quarterfinals.
