McLaren Group has introduced a track-day version of its MP4-12C GT3 race car, with more power, less weight, and better aero, for the well-heeled buyer who wants more performance on closed courses.
Built by McLaren’s competition arm, McLaren GT, the 12C Can-Am Edition is a one-off design study, revealed at the Pebble Beach Concours; there is no word yet whether or not it will go into production.
The new cart features a 630-bhp version of the standard twin-turbo 3.8-liter V8, in a chassis weighing only 2,654 lbs. The standard MP4 offers 592 hp and weighs 3,164 lbs.—the GT3 has 493 hp and weighs in under 3,000.
With a new front splitter, dive planes, rear wing and rear diffuser, all in carbon fiber, the car generates 30 percent more downforce than its road-going counterpart.
The new model is shod with Pirelli racing slicks, so prospective owners will need a trailer and tow vehicle—but anyone who can afford the car can afford those paltry expenses. The basic MP4 GT3 costs about $495,000.
