McDonald’s said it would give Charles Ramsey, the man described as the rescuer of three kidnapped Cleveland women earlier this month, free food for a year.
The move follows local Cleveland restaurants giving Ramsey free burgers for life, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer.
In a video that went viral on YouTube, Ramsey gave reporters a colorful account of saving one of the women, Amanda Berry, who was held in a Cleveland home for around a decade. Ramsey said that he was eating a McDonald’s Big Mac when he saw Berry trying to claw her way out of the home.
Two other missing women, Amanda Berry and Gina DeJesus, were also rescued.
“I’m eating my McDonald’s, I come outside, I see this girl going nuts trying to get out of her house. So I go on the porch and she says, ‘Help me get out, I’ve been here a long time,’” Ramsey said in the video.
McDonald’s also donated $10,000 to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, reported CNN.
“It was the best advert you could get -- Heroes eat Big Macs,” one Twitter user wrote. Some users called on the fast food chain to give Ramsey free food.
Scott Kuhn of Driftwood Restaurant Group told the Cleveland Plain Dealer that Ramsey could get free burgers for life.
“We want to honor our local hero with local food. He stopped his meal midway through to help those women. We’re now making sure he has other opportunities to go out and fully enjoy his burger,” Kuhn said.
