NEW YORK—Gov. Andrew Cuomo has directed that American flags on all state buildings be lowered to half-staff on Thursday, July 7, to honor and pay tribute to Marine Corps Cpl. Kyle Schneider.

Schneider was a resident of Phoenix, N.Y., and died last Thursday at the age of 23, in Afghanistan from an improvised explosive device, according to Syracuse.com.

“On behalf of all New Yorkers, I want to express my condolences to the family, friends, and fellow Marines of Corporal Scheider,” Gov. Cuomo said. “We will remember his dedication and his service to our country. This weekend, as we commemorate America’s independence, we honor the soldiers like Corporal Schneider who made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation.”

The corporal was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment of the 2nd Marine Division of the II Marine Expeditionary Force based at Camp Lejeune, N.C. Schneider was the 8th soldier to die in Afghanistan last week.

His family flew to Delaware on Saturday for the return of his remains and his grandparents told The Post-Standard a memorial service would be held for Schneider in Baldwinsville.
