The Blancpain Endurance Series brought its 50-car GT3 show to a rainy Silverstone raceway Sunday and demonstrated again why GT3 racing is quickly becoming the brightest jewel in the GT crown.
MarcVDS BMW team won the race, as it won the opening round at Monza; the BMW Z4 got better as the track got dryer, while the pursuing WRT Audi R8 Ultras lost pace in the final stint. The margin of victory was almost a minute—all that was not what made the race exciting.
What made the worth exciting were the non-stop battles throughout the field—up front in the early laps, and everywhere else throughout the race.
The lineup of drivers in this series is amazing—every driver is a star form another series or will be soon. The variety of cars is pure candy for fans—Mercedes, McLaren, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Audi, BMW. Performance balancing, which can make or break a series, has worked so far.
The number of retirements was impressively low. Despite a very slick circuit, there were only a few spins and no wrecks—the safety car never left its parking spot.
The Blancpain Endurance Series continues in Sunday on July 1s at France’s Paul Ricard High-Tech Test Track.
