NEW YORK—Manhattan’s population increases by 1.6 million on an average workday—by far the largest commuter population in the nation.
The second largest commuter population in the United States is in Washington, D.C., where approximately 440,000 people enter and leave the city on an average workday. A report on workforce population increases released Wednesday by NY'’s Rudin Center for Transportation Policy analyzed data for 2009.
With a base population of 1.62 million in Manhattan, outside commuters create about a 90 percent population increase during the workday. With a base population of 688,000 in Washington, D.C., the workforce population increase is about 65 percent.
