A man reportedly jumped into the flames at the annual Burning Man festival in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert.
The unidentified man was feared dead after he plunged into the flames of the burning effigy. Photos showed him sprinting to the blaze, diving head-first into the fire at around 10:30 p.m. Saturday night.
Black Rock City firefighters rescued the man, and he was treated at the scene, the festival said in a statement on its website. As of Sunday, his condition was not clear.
After the man “broke through a safety perimeter” and was treated, he was “transported to the on-site medical facility and airlifted to a burn treatment center.
Approximately 70,000 people attended the festival, which is held every year.
Late last month, a lightning strike sparked a massive wildfire in Nevada, forcing officials to close down the main road between Reno, Nevada, and Burning Man.
“The wildfire came up on the side of the road and there was a lot of smoke and wind and they were getting really close to the roadway and it was too dangerous for our drivers,” State Trooper Dan Gordon of the Nevada Highway Patrol-Northern Command West told ABC. “With the winds we’re at the beck and call of Mother Nature for stuff like that.”
It was reopened several hours later.
