Luke Scott, who played for Baltimore from 2008–2011 but was not resigned in the offseason, was signed to a one-year deal (including a 2013 option) by the Tampa Bay Rays on Thursday according to a statement from the Rays.
The Rays, who pursued Scott before the 2010 season, hope the first baseman/outfielder/DH can provide a hot bat in the middle of their lineup.
“Luke has established himself as one of the better power hitters in baseball, with consistent success in a variety of roles against both right and left-handed pitchers,” said Andrew Friedman, executive vice president, Baseball Operations for the Rays, according to a statement.
The left-handed Scott had an injury-filled 2011 campaign, missing half the season after tearing the labrum in his right shoulder. In his previous three seasons, however, he combined for a batting average of .269, with 84 doubles and 75 home runs, numbers not too far from future-teammate, and three-time all-star Evan Longoria.
