Six-year-old Lori Anne Madison, the youngest contestant on record, advanced through the preliminaries of the annual Scripps National Spelling Bee on Wednesday.
Madison, one of the 278 spellers from all 50 states, is a second-grader at NovaTAG Prince William County Homeschool in Woodbridge, Va. She entered her first spelling bee contest at the age of 3.
According to her profile on the National Spelling Bee’s website, Madison has won gold medals in the National Mythology and Etymology Exams, first place in the 2010 Prince William County HOPE Science Fair, and will be competing in FIRST LEGO League.
“She is an avid reader, enjoys spending time with her friends, and has recently discovered birding as a hobby. Lori Anne often studies while swinging upside down or jumping on her trampoline,” her profile reads.
The semifinals will take place at 10 a.m. EST on Thursday. The final round is scheduled to happen at 8 p.m. EST on Friday.
