Tampa Bay Rays has signed third baseman Evan Longoria to a six-year, $100 million extension that will keep him under contract through the 2022 season, according to a report on MLB’s website.
Longoria’s new contract includes the salaries from the 2013-16 season and then extends through 2022 for $100 million, plus it has a club option for 2023.
“In signing this contract, I kind of wanted to show that I’m committed to this organization,” Longoria said. “Obviously you look at a lot of comparable contracts and what guys [he is comparable to are signing contracts for now], it was obviously a big deal to be able to get what they were commanding when they signed their deals.”
Longoria’s original deal was signed six games into his career (back in 2008) for $44 million—$17.5 million guaranteed—over nine seasons.
