Libyan rebels have shut off a pipeline supplying crude oil to a refinery located near the capital of Tripoli, a rebel spokesman said on Monday, reported Reuters.
The pipeline, located in the Western Mountains region supplies crude from an oilfield in the south to the Zawiyah refinery.
“Rebels have turned off a pipeline in Rayayna, which is used to ship oil from the Awbari oilfield in the south to the Zawiyah refinery,” rebel spokesman Juma Ibrahim told Reuters by phone from the Western Mountains town of Zintan. “This is an attempt by the rebels to stifle the Gadhafi regime in Tripoli.”
Libyan oil minister, and a former prime minister, Shukri Ghanem defected to Tunisia three weeks ago over the regime’s “daily spilling of blood,” reported Al Jazeera at the time.
