Disco balls hanging in boardrooms and strobe lights flashing away in top-secret meetings could become the norm.
Li-Fi, or light fidelity, is the ability to provide high-bandwidth connectivity in a localized area using the visible light spectrum instead of the traditional radio spectrum.
An article from The Daily Dot indicates that Sisoft has succeeded in transferring audio, video, and Internet signals across a spectrum of light using light-emitting diode (LED) lamps. It works by flashing the light at speeds imperceptible to the human eye, and because light cannot pass through walls it makes for a more secure connection than Wi-Fi, reported AlphaGalileo.
With Li-Fi, or visual light communication (VLC) as it is sometimes called, data transfer rates can reach up to 10 gigabits per second.
However, we don’t know how many light years we may have to wait before this technology finds its place in the universe.
