NEW YORK—Private sector employment rose by 5,000 in New York City from May to June, according to statistics released by the New York City Economic Development Corporation this weekend.
Unemployment, however, also increased to 10 percent in June, up 0.3 percent from May. The city’s total unemployed residents rose by 14,100, and the government sector lost around 1,000 jobs.
Employment in the private sector has been increasingly steadily over the last year. From June 2011 to June 2012, private sector employment increased 2.5 percent, providing 80,000 more jobs.
The accommodation and food industry has seen a 6.8 percent and 7.7 percent growth in establishments and employment respectively over the year to June. The industry added almost 4,000 new jobs from May to June, according to the statistics.
The increase in private sector employment is a statewide trend. New York state added 15,400 private sector jobs in June, despite a 0.3 percent rise in the unemployment rate to 10 percent.
“The latest job statistics show that while New York has regained all of the private sector jobs it lost during the state’s recession, the United States has only recouped 42 percent of its lost jobs,” said Bohdan Wynnyk, New York State Labor Department deputy director of the research and statistics division, in a release.
