The team in “Law & Order: UK” is still reeling from the death of Wes Layton in the season 8 finale, and the episode will feature the introduction of DI Elizabeth Flynn (Sharon Small).

The episode, set for a April 30 air date on ITV, throws Flynn right into the thick of things as she has to deal with a botched case.

Ronnie and Joe face a challenge when an innocent young mum is fatally stabbed in a busy marketplace, just as a senior police officer publicly pledges to crack down on knife crime

Under pressure from all sides, the pair struggle to gather evidence against the youth they think is responsible, and the suspect’s unintentional confession appears to bring the case to a close.

However, Ronnie is the only person who hears the admission and others don’t believe him--and then people start saying that he’s racist, as the suspect is a black boy.

“The case has collapsed. Surely someone has to be held responsible?” a reporter says pointedly to Flynn, with a gaggle of press outside the court.

Ronnie then meets with Flynn. “After nearly 40 years, I’m the sacrifice,” he tells her. The only way to see if he truly loses his career is to tune in at 9 p.m.

As for a series 9, that hasn’t been confirmed as of yet.
