Lady Gaga’s new song, “Applause,” says the word 30 times in about 3 minutes. The track was leaked on Monday ahead of its official release.
Hollywood.com was first to point it out, while criticizing the “uninspired” content of the lyrics.
“Put your hands up, make ‘em touch!” Gaga says at the outset of the track before the synthesizers and beat kicks in. “This is pop doing what good pop songs should do, which is grab you by the collar from the first listen and make you fall in love on the spot,” wrote Idolator in a positive review.
Overall, the song--which is definitely intended for clubs--received somewhat mixed reviews.
“Simply put, this one sounds massive, the kind of banger custom-made for massive soundsystems and dance-floor excesses,” wrote MTV, while Fuse wrote that “the song is for the club, the elliptical or anywhere in between (that has strobe lights and lasers, of course).”
However, SPIN magazine wrote that “Applause” is “the sound of one pop star clapping for herself.”
Initially, Lady Gaga’s Little Monsters website has encouraged fans to report any website that hosts the song by reporting it to Universal Music. “DUE TO HACKERS AN ABUNDANCE OF LOW/HIGH QUALITY LEAKS...WE ISSUE THIS POP MUSIC EMERGENCY...MONSTERS SPREAD THE WORD,” she wrote on Twitter.
But the leaks proved to be too much, with Gaga and Universal releasing the track to radio stations as well as Apple’s iTunes, according to the Guardian.
“IM ON THE RADIO I CAN'T BELIEVE IT! IT FEELS LIKE THE FIRST TIME! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR *APPLAUSE,* WE ARE SO HAPPY YOU LOVE IT!” the singer wrote on Twitter.
