Kelly Hackendahl has been identified as the Indiana University student found dead in the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority house on the university’s Bloomington campus on Thursday night.
Hackendahl, 20, hailed from Libertyville, Illinois and was pursuing a degree in education.
In a statement, Zeta Tau Alpha national president Carolyn Hof Carpenter said, “We are devastated to lose one of our collegiate sisters.”
The IU chapter of the sorority added via Twitter: “Kelly, you brought so much love and light to our chapter and our lives. We will miss you every day. Thanks to all for the love and support.”

University police responded to the house after a call for medical assistance shortly before 8 p.m., university spokesman Mark Land told the Indy Star. They found Hackendahl, a junior at the college, “unconscious and unresponsive,” but attempts to revive her were unsuccessful.
“The precise cause of death is still being investigated but foul play is not suspected,” Land said in a statement.
Hackendahl was a good student, evidenced by making the list “University Division of Scholars of High Distinction” in her freshman year.
