The art gallery that said it would display photos of Kate Upton and Jennifer Lawrence has said that it won’t go ahead with the exhibition.
The gallery ultimately noted that the photos of the two stars are “stolen property.”
“It wasn’t just about being ‘hacked’ images anymore, but now presented in the media as stolen property,” artist XVALA said, The Independent reported. “People were identifying with Jennifer Lawrence’s and Kate Upton’s victimisation, much more than I had anticipated, which is powerfully persuasive.”
XVALA added: ““This concept was always about self-examination in our current culture. Why we feel the need to know and cross the lines of other individuals’ privacy.”
It was to take place in St. Petersburg, Fla., at the Cory Allen Contemporary Art gallery.
Allen issued a statement to E! News: “It was inspiring to see people take action through a petition, signing their name and not just commenting on a thread.”
XVALA said they felt their move to raise public awareness was met.
“This concept was always about self-examination in our current culture,” XVALA said. “Why we feel the need to know and cross the lines of other individual’s privacy.”
When the photo leak took place, Upton’s reps said they were “looking into” the authenticity of the pictures.
And Lawrence’s reps said, “This is a flagrant violation of privacy. The authorities have been contacted and will prosecute anyone who posts the stolen photos of Jennifer Lawrence.”
