Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick aren’t only co-stars in the new animated film, “Trolls,” but are singing buddies as well.
The pair—with an unidentified guitarist—took the stage at the Cannes Film Festival on May 11 where they surprised fans with an acoustic version performance of Cyndi Lauper’s 1986 hit, “True Colors.”
“We are Anna and Garfunkel,” said Timberlake, introducing themselves to the crowd. “We’re going to give this a go, but you guys have to be nice.”
An apparently nervous Kendrick added: “We’re just having fun, we’re just friends here, right? This isn’t like a big deal. We’re just like, hanging out in your living room and this isn’t a big deal.”
As the duo prepares to sing, an overzealous fan screams out “I love you,” leading to a brief pause and laughter from the crowd.
“You sound like you’re seven,” responded Timberlake. “But I love you too. Go see ‘Trolls.’”
The emotional performance ends with loud cheers from the crowd and a high five between Kendrick and Timberlake.
The “Trolls” soundtrack is scheduled for a fall release and will feature “True Colors” as well as Justin Timberlake’s new single, “Can’t Stop the Feeling,” which was released on May 6.
The accompanied video for the single includes his DreamWorks Animation’s 3-D film co-stars—Gwen Stefani, James Corden, Anna Kendrick, Kunal Nayyar, Ron Funches all partake in a listening session of the song, and in various locations sing and dance to the track. Timberlake is the executive music producer for the soundtrack.
Kendrick and Timberlake are currently promoting the animated film, where the duo play a cheerful troll (Poppy) and a crabby troll (Branch), respectively. Kendrick spoke highly of her co-star in an interview with Entertainment Tonight.
“Sometimes this is a little bit crazy and it’s good to have kind of a practical partner in crime, because sometimes actors can be crazy,” Kendrick said. “And musicians, even more so, even though I know fewer. But Justin is just a practical person and a good person to have on your team when you’re facing this kind of craziness.”
