NEW YORK—Current junior featherweight champion boxer, Juan Manuel “Juanma” Lopez was joined at a press conference by his upcoming opponent, the undefeated Oliver Lontchi.
Held at the B.B. King Blues Club & Grill at New York’s Times Square on Wednesday, the two boxers spoke of their upcoming match, “Latin Fury 9”.
The anticipated match will be held at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City on June 27.
Making his way to Atlantic City, Lopez will be returning to the site where he won his world title against Daniel Ponce De Leon. Lopez, originally from Puerto Rico, won in a first-round knockout during the June 7, 2008 bout.
Leon was champion for seven years prior to the match—a title that he defended seven times.
Since his victory, Lopez has defended his belt three times, all of which ended in knockouts. The last match was the only of his that lasted past the first round.
Lopez has gained a reputation for his quick matches and boasts a knockout percentage of 92 percent. He is currently running a 13-bout victory streak.
In the upcoming, 12-round match, the undefeated Lontchi brings a formidable threat to Lopez’s title.
A native of Cameroon, now residing in Quebec, Canada, Lontchi is the current super bantamweight champion.
His last match was on April 4 when he defended his title against Cecilio Santos. Currently, Lontchi is ranked third by the World Boxing Association, and is ranked seventh by the World Boxing Organization.
In addition to the main event, the televised Pay-Per-View portion of the match will feature a 12-round super flyweight bout between four-time world champion Jorge Arce and Fernando “Poe” Lumacad.
Two other matches will feature a junior middleweight elimination bout and another 10-round junior bout.
“A world championship fight plus three more battles between top-rated contenders. Whether you see it in-person or live on pay-per-view, fans are in store for an action-packed night,” said promoter Bob Arum in a press release.
“Even though their fights are in Atlantic City, it’s not going to be a walk on the beach for any of these fighters.”
