New York Jets’ starting safety and punt returner Jim Leonhard is done for the season with a torn patella tendon, according to head coach Rex Ryan speaking on his Monday conference call. “It’s really an unfortunate thing. Jimmy made a great play on the interception and then has this injury,” said Ryan.
The Jets’ Coach announced that backup safety Brodney Pool will start in Leonhard’s place. Pool, a seven year veteran, has 64 career starts with Cleveland and the Jets.
The injury marks the second straight season Leonhard will end the season on injured reserve. Last season, the 29-year old broke his leg in practice and missed the final five games of the season as well as the three playoff games.
The Jets first test without Leonhard will be this Sunday in Philadelphia.
