The New Orleans Saints released Jeremy Shockey on Tuesday, cutting ties with the tight end after a lackluster stint with the NFC South team.
Saints Executive Vice President and General Manager Mickey Loomis, in a team statement on its website, thanked Shockey “for the contributions he made to our team during his time in New Orleans.”
In his three years with the Saints, Shockey put up subpar numbers and never played as often as when he was in his prime with his previous team, the New York Giants.
Shockey won a Super Bowl ring with both the Saints and the Giants, but that didn’t stop him from leaving both teams.
“Jeremy played an important role in helping our team bring a Super Bowl championship to New Orleans,” Saints head coach Sean Payton said in a statement. “He contributed to the success of our offense, both as a pass-catcher and run blocker, and we’re appreciative of his efforts.”
Shockey was traded to the Saints after the 2007 season. He made the Pro Bowl four times with the Giants (2002, 2003, 2005, and 2006) but never with the Saints.
In 38 games (34 starts) with the Saints, Shockey caught 139 passes for 1,460 yards and six touchdowns. His late fourth-quarter touchdown reception in Super Bowl XLIV helped secure the Saints their first NFL title ever.
