A Modesto, California, man says that his 6-year-old son’s life was saved by medical marijuana.

Jason David, whose son Jayden suffers from a rare form of epilepsy, said that he searched high and low for a suitable treatment method for his son.

He ultimately discovered that a substance extracted from marijuana, called cannabidiol, helps with Jayden’s seizures, reported the Modesto Bee. The paper points out that there is no research showing that cannabidiol helps with seizures, and David is just giving his own experience.

“My son’s seizure activity is down dramatically,” David told the paper. “He’s able to walk, swim and ride roller coasters at amusement parks. I used to give him 22 pills a day; now I give him two.”

David said that before, his son was facing a life-or-death situation.

“Jayden was having 300 to 500 myoclonic twitches and seizures a day,” David told CBS Sacramento. “Grand mal seizures were lasting an hour and a half. After five minutes we were seeing brain damage.”

And the slew of medications he gave his son was making him comatose.

“My son started dying from them,” he said. “The last two months before I used medical marijuana, Jayden was yelling and screaming, crying out in pain. He wasn’t eating; he wasn’t sleeping.”

But now, with the cannabidiol oil extract, which is administered via a drop, the boy can now go seizure-free.

“One day after I came home from church, I gave it to Jayden and that was the first day Jayden ever went seizure free in his life,” he said.
