Jay Leno’s joke about NBC executives on Monday night’s “Tonight Show” has some speculating that the host has a rocky relationship with his bosses.

“You know the whole legend of St. Patrick, right?,” Leno asked, according to the L.A. Times. “St. Patrick drove all the snakes out of Ireland, and then they came into the United States and became NBC executives … It’s a fascinating story, a fascinating story.”

Some of the audience members gasped, reported the L.A. Times.

Two NBC insiders, who wished to remain unnamed, told The Hollywood Reporter earlier this month that the 2013–2014 season may be Leno’s last on the “Tonight Show.” The network has reportedly been considering moving Jimmy Fallon into Leno’s slot to compete with Jimmy Kimmel, who has the 11:35 p.m. Time slot on ABC.

NBC chief Bob Greenblatt said in January that “All of those conversations are a little bit premature,” according to entertainment publication Broadcasting & Cable.

When the L.A. Times inquired Tuesday, Leno’s publicist and NBC’s representatives had no further comments.
