In the heat of the summer on July 24, Pepsi Japan is set to unveil its newest drink: salty watermelon flavored soda.

But this daring new creation did have its origins. While New Yorkers adore the mango with a sprinkle of salt and a splash of lemon juice that they buy at the corner of the street, on the other side of the globe, the Japanese are known to sprinkle salt on watermelon to “bring out the taste,” as noted by ShortList.com.

Pepsi Japan is known for their experimental creations. In the past they had released Pepsi White, which mixes in yogurt, Pepsi Pink with a strawberry milk flavor, and the self-explanatory “Ice Cucumber” Pepsi.

According to the Japanese website of Japanese brewing and distilling company group Suntory, salty watermelon Pepsi is the newest limited summer edition of the century-old soft drink maker.

The translucent red drink and the packaging, with a round watermelon set before a beach and a blue sky, are aimed to express “the joy of an exciting summer vacation,” Suntory said.
