The IRS has introduced a new mobile application for Apple iPhones and Android phones to help taxpayers track their refund status this tax season.
The application, called IRS2Go, provides “information you need—whenever you need it, wherever you are—” on your tax refunds, the IRS announced earlier this month.
Mobile device users can punch their Social Security number into the application, which securely masks and encrypts personal information, then check their tax filing status, and provide their expected refund from their 2010 tax return.
Those who filed a return electronically can check their refund status after a few days, but taxpayers who filed by paper will have to wait an extra few weeks to know the status of their anticipated refund.
The Apple iPhone/iPod Touch application is available on the iTunes app store, while the Android application is available at the Android Marketplace.
Alternatively, tax filers can check their IRS refund status on their computers’ browsers at the IRS’s Where’s My Refund site. The same process applies: Enter your Social Security Number, filing status, and refund amount, then your refund status will be supplied to you in the same time period as if you had used the mobile application.
