Fortifying Diyala province. Iraqi forces build a wall to keep out fighters from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) — also known as Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS). The extremist offshoot of Al-Qaeda has blazed across northern and western Iraq, parading it’s weapons through the streets. It’s presented the biggest security threat to the country since the bloodshed unleashed by the U.S.-led invasion to oust Saddam Hussein in 2003.

Washington is watching closely and has sent US militay advisor to help the country fight off the extremists’ insurgency. But US President Barack Obama has held off on putting US boots on the ground believing that Baghdad can defend itself.
