Apple’s newest product, the iPad 2, did extremely well in its debut weekend, with sales at approximately 400,000 to 600,000 units, according to media reports.

The new device is not only available at Apple stores, but also at Best Buy, Target, AT&T and many other major retailers. Even so, the supply of iPad 2s is not enough to satisfy customer demand, reported the Wall Street Journal.

Apple made many improvements in its production of the iPad 2, including a thinner, sleeker exterior, a faster processor, and front and back cameras.

“We didn’t expect anything close to this,” analyst Gene Munster for Piper Jaffray & Co. told the Journal. “iPads are sold out across virtually all channels. We were unable to find any availability.”

Most customers who purchased the iPad 2 were new to tablets although many owners of the original iPad also chose to upgrade, according to PC World.

“Demand for the next-generation iPad has been amazing, and we are working hard to get iPad 2 into the hands of every customer who wants one as quickly as possible,” said Apple spokeswoman Trudy Muller, according to Bloomberg news.

Apple has not yet issued any iPad 2 sales reports, but the company’s stock has risen by 1 percent since the debut of the product at 5 p.m. on Friday.

The added features on the new model could explain the high demand for the iPad 2, but the new Smart Covers have also attracted attention. The covers, made out of leather or polyurethane, come in many colors and cling to the iPad through magnets.

Also, compared to the original iPad, the iPad 2 is tested to have a longer battery life and is twice as fast as the original one when it comes to loading GarageBand files, according to PC World.
