A large tornado was reported to hit Quimby, Iowa in Cherokee County on Friday night. The National Weather Service reported there was likely “major damage” done by the tornado.
On Twitter, preliminary reports said that just trees and power lines were down in Quimby, and no major damage was done.
KCAU-TV, via Twitter, described the tornado as “catastrophic” and was between Quimby and Cherokee. The tornado reportedly touched down in Quimby at around 7:30 p.m. CDT.
In Cherokee, there was no damage reported, said photographer Dan Gottschalk.
Gottschalk added there were “lots of trees down and minor damage to homes in #Quimby.”
Severestudios, a storm-chasing organization, said the tornado that passed through was “large” and “violent.”
The Weather Service also said there were “several power poles down west of Washta.” The Associated Press said poles were down in Quimby.
At around 7:45 p.m., reports said the tornado was moving northeast.
