In the Kallio neighborhood of Helsinki, Finland, Sonja Sorvola, an actress who embraces tooth jewelry, likes to be more adventurous than the typical structured Scandinavian style.
Reporter Shern Sharma explores streets of Helsinki neighborhood Kallio to find what define the famous Scandinavian fashion.
“In Helsinki, you can find many very ordinary people, but then also those ‘over the top’,” describes her home seamstress Elli Karvinen. “I think Kallio is more known as a hipster area,” continue Elli dressed in black from tip-to-toe. “I pretty much always wear the black. I like very simple clothes.”
For Mikko Laak, coordinator at Architecture informational centre, “fashion in Kallio is very broad. There is lot of people who like to go to flea market or people wearing local designers clothes, but at the same time, you can still find here granny from the next door dressed in her old jumper”
Journalist Anniina Mustalahti wears only clothes that inspires her. “I can be inspired by stories, people, the [whole] town... What I love about Helsinki is that you can find here many things that are telling their stories.”
