A Michigan jail has been forced to serve inmates a strict diet of peanut butter and jelly or bologna sandwiches for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
When the 50 year-old freezers broke down at the Macomb County Jail located just outside of Mt. Clemens, mold was soon found. With no way to preserve food, the jail was forced to make due with an all sandwich regimen.
On prison.com (a support and information website for family and friends of inmates) one woman reported that her husband, an inmate at the jail, was issued four slices of bread and a jelly packet.
According to the Detroit Free Press, officials have reported freezer concerns to county commissioners as early as 2005. They are hoping that emergency funds will be redirected to replace the faulty freezers soon.
