SEBRING, Fla.—After days of cold rainy weather, the skies were clear and the sun shining at the Sebring International raceway, site of the two-day 2017 IMSA WeatherTech Winter test.
About three dozen cars from the WeatherTech Sportscar Championship turned out to test their set-ups for the season’s next event, the Mobil 1 Sebring Twelve Hours on March 18.
Ten prototypes were entered; the quickest, no surprise was the #5 Mustang Sampling Cadillac DPi V.R, a car which came with several car-lengths of winning the season opening Rolex 24 at Daytona. Driver Filipe Albuquerque lapped Sebring’s rugged 3.74-mile track in 1:49.759 in the afternoon session.
The Rolex 24 GT Le Mans class-winning #66 Ford-Ganassi Ford GT was quickest in class on the day, with driver Dirk Mueller turning in a time of 1:58.894.
Colin Braun in the GT Daytona #54 Core Autosport Porsche 911 GT3 R was quickest in class at 2:02.691.
Chuck Quinton in the Don’t-Hit-Me-Pink #8 Starworks Oreca-Chevrolet topped the Prototype Challenge class with a lap of 1:56.120.
Racing resumes at 8 a.m. on Friday and continues until 5 p.m. Tickets cost $10. people holding tickets for the Sebring Twelve Hours can attend the Winter Test for free.
