An I-80 sinkhole forced the closure of several lanes near Truckee, located in Northern California, according to reports on Friday.
The sinkhole, which is around 8 feet deep and 3 feet wide, opened underneath an I-80 median near Donner Pass Road in Truckee, said RGJ.com.
“The sinkhole developed in the center median around Donner Pass Road during a paving operation early this morning,” according to a statement from Caltrans, according to the Tahoe Daily Tribune. “The sinkhole is estimated to be approximately three feet in diameter and more than eight feet deep.”
“They think it is eight feet (deep), but they have not been able to see the bottom (of the sink hole),” California Department of Transportation spokeswoman Rochelle Jenkins told the website.
The hole was spotted during the construction of the median, and it is entering two lanes, but officials said it isn’t showing any signs of cracking or stress.
Jenkins said the sinkhole is deep because crews “still couldn’t see (the bottom)” when they looked inside it. She added, “That’s when you know we have a problem.”
The Sacramento Bee reported that all west-bound lanes of I-80 were reopened later on Friday. One eastbound lane remains closed
