The so-called HUVr Tech ’real hoverboard' is fake and part of a hoax.
The company released multiple videos showing purported demonstrations of the board, emphasizing that “The following demonstrations are completely real,” but they are in fact not real.
One of the reasons that so many people were fooled is that a number of celebrities, including Christoper Lloyd from “Back to the Future” and skateboarder Tony Hawk, were involved in the elaborate ruse.
The hoverboard was also supposedly promoted by Mark Cuban, owner of the Dallas Mavericks and noted venture capitalist. “Once in a rare while do you get the chance to be part of something this big. This is one of those times. I’ve never been so excited for a product I’ve invested in,” he’s quoted on the website.
A number of signs point to the product being fake.
There’s lots of overproduction done on the videos, and it’s alleged to be for marketing purposes. It could be a publicity stunt for Tony Hawk’s upcoming video game.
Later, Funny or Die confessed to being behind the hoax.
They posted a video with Llyod apologizing for promoting HUVr when it was fake. He claims he was “blinded by all belief.”
People who wanted to buy one can take comfort in the fact that it is possible to make one, though they’re likely years away from hitting the market.
