New York—Caroline’s on Broadway held an open call for stand up comedians on Tuesday and Wednesday this week. Any comics who thought they had what it takes to be called “New York’s Funniest” were welcome to come and try out.

A long line of cold comedians stood outside Caroline’s on Broadway Wednesday afternoon waiting for their turn to get a chance at stardom. Caroline’s website says that they are America’s premier comedy club; a tempting part of the prize for all those shivering on the sidewalk Wednesday includes a week of performances on Caroline’s stage. Also included in the prize are cash and a guest spot on one of the major festival shows.

Each comedian was asked to perform two minutes of stand-up in front of a panel of judges who based their evaluations on material, originality, and stage presence.

Out of the hundreds of that tried out, thirty comedians will be chosen to advance to the semi-final rounds on October 28th and 29th. There they will have to perform five-minute routines in front of a live audience at the Stand-Up NY comedy club.

Five finalists from each semi-final round will be chosen to complete eight minutes of stand up in front of a panel of industry judges at Caroline’s. The finals will be part of the 2008 New York Comedy Festival on Wednesday, November Fifth.

Last year’s winner received $2,500 and an opening slot for Artie Lange. Unlike this year the contestants in last year’s contest did not have to stand out on the cold for hours but had pre-arranged audition times.
