Autumn is a welcome opportunity to bring a little of the outdoors into your home. To highlight the wonderful rich hues that come with the fall season, applying a fresh finish to wood furniture, cabinets, and accessories is a simple DIY project that emphasizes the natural grain pattern on any wood.

Here are some simple staining tips to ensure the best results for your finished product:

Equipment:

Fine grit sandpaper
Disposable rubber gloves
Minwax Wood Finishing Cloths
Clean rag

Directions:

Sanding: Always prepare the wood with a light sanding. This ensures that you will get a nice even coat of stain. Always sand in the direction of the grain to avoid leaving scratches and use a fine grit sandpaper to get a smooth appearance. Make sure to remove all the sanding dust before moving on.

Preparation: To keep hands clean, wear the gloves provided in the Minwax Finishing Cloths package. Open the front label. Remove a stain cloth and close front label to keep cloths from drying out.

Application: Using the pre-moistened stain cloth wipe in the direction of the wood grain, working the colour into the surface. Wipe off any excess stain with a clean rag. Never allow any excess stain to dry on wood surface—it will become sticky.

Evaluation: After letting the finish sit for an hour, evaluate your work. If you are satisfied do not apply any further stain. However, for an even deeper colour and sheen, wait one hour, and then apply a second coat, using a fresh cloth. Remember—stain provides colour, but not a lot of protection. Apply a clear finish product such as Minwax Polycyclic protective finish to protect both the stain and the wood.
