HONG KONG—For the third consecutive year, all officers at the Hong Kong Lawn Bowls Association were re-elected at the Annual General Meeting on Sept 21 as there were no challengers for their positions.
After the confirmation of the appointments at the meeting on Monday, September 21, Kowloon Bowling Green Club and Hong Kong Football Club maintained their strong presence at the management team of the Association, with three members each. The other three members including President Vincent Cheung from the Police, Vice President – Technical Claudius Lam from Craigengower Cricket Club and Assistant Honorary Secretary Derek Lee from Kowloon Cricket Club.
President Cheung will also serve his 17th terms in the office and the works this year will continue to focus in two areas, “In the last few years we have some success to promote the sport across the territories and this can be reflected by the high demand of the training courses we provided. The other area that needs further attention will be our elite squad training.”
“The two areas of focus are inter-related as the increase in the number of bowlers provided a continual flow of talent for our elite squad. The enhancement on the training for elite players will generate better results internationally and this will attract more people to join the sport,” said Cheung.
Since lawn bowls being granted the status of second level Elite Sport by the Hong Kong Sports Institute in 2013, comprehensive training programs have been implemented for Hong Kong’s senior and youth team respectively.
In addition to the regular bowls trainings, physical training and training camps (locally and overseas) have also been introduced as a way to enhance performance of the Hong Kong team.
Good results at international competitions were achieved since then and lawn bowls has successfully passed the mid-term review of the Elite Sport program earlier this year and should be able to extend the current status to 2019, subject to another review at the end of 2016.
“With the improvement in training and continual fine-tuning of the selection process, I feel that the future of lawn bowls looks much brighter than 16 years ago when I took on this role for the first time,” said Cheung.
A number of international competitions are awaiting the Hong Kong team in the next few months, including the National Bocce (Lawn Bowls) Elite Championships in China, Asia Pacific Merdeka Singles, Mixed Pairs and Fours in Malaysia, Japan International Open in Yokohama, Hong Kong International Classic and Asia Pacific Championship in New Zealand.
