Avid hiker Michael Glidden was hiking with his two Alaskan Eskimo dogs about 60 miles south of Anchorage, Alaska when the weather went downhill. The temperatures dipped to about 25 degrees and it started to rain.

Seeking shelter, Glidden found an ice cave with a dark shaft heading back into a mountain.

In the cave, Glidden turned on his camera flash and blindly shot into the cave. When he got home and saw the photos he got a shock. He saw that his dog had come within feet of a giant, hibernating black bear.

Glidden says he is honored to have been that close to a black bear, but also admits that hanging around in dark caves may not be such a good idea.
