High school QB drowns: A North Carolina high school quarterback who was slated to graduate in several weeks drowned off the coast on Thursday evening, it was reported.

Southwest Onslow High School quarterback Shak Pershey went swimming in the ocean at night when he drowned, reported WBTW-TV.

Authorities were called in to help with a search and rescue effort but it was called off around two hours later.

But officials eventually found Pershey’s body on Friday morning near North Topsail Beach.

Onslow County Emergency Manager Norman Bryson described the waters at the time as “very choppy,” reported WXII-12.

“I believe the young man may have been caught in some sort of cross current that may have pulled him down,” Stuart Turille, the town manager of North Topsail Beach, was quoted by WNCT television as saying.

Pershey won the Class 1AA state championship in December.
