Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton Perform New Duet on ‘The Voice’

Updated:

Let’s hope art doesn’t imitate life for these two.

Lovebirds Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani performed their new duet, “Go Ahead and Break My Heart” on the May 9 airing on NBC “The Voice”—and the chemistry was apparent.

The performance begins with a singing Shelton plucking the strings of his guitar. After the first verse Stefani appears from the darkness and joins him on stage. Stefani, in a sheer mermaid-style gown adorned with sparkling jewels by Australian designer Jaime Lee, gazed into the eyes of the country musician, who wore a white dress shirt and tie.

The lyrics of the song are telling:

“Why don’t you go ahead and break my heart? / Why are you waiting, is it way too hard? / If moving on is what you want to do / Why don’t you do it?” sang the pair together.

Stefani and Shelton each experienced their own bout with heartbreak last year when they both publicly divorced their former significant others. Stefani, who was married to Gavin Rossdale for over 10 years, called it quits last year amid allegations of infidelity. Shelton and fellow country musician Miranda Lambert divorced after five years of marriage.

It was in November when Shelton and Stefani, 44, began their relationship on the music competition show, “The Voice” where they both were judges. Stefani has stated she has found musical inspiration as a result of their budding romance.

The pop princess admitted that “Make Me Like You” off her latest album, “This Is What the Truth Feels Like” is about the 39-year-old hunk on an appearance of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!

“It is, actually,” she said. “I will admit that that song is about that guy, yeah.”

Shelton hasn’t shied away from using his life experiences in his music as well.

“I can put my life experience, whether it’s a divorce or my new girlfriend, whatever those experiences are, whatever things that are happening in my life, I have an outlet for them,” he said in an interview with Entertainment Tonight. “I have music. I can write songs, I can sing about it.”

The duet track “Go Ahead and Break My Heart” is on Shelton’s upcoming album, “If I’m Honest,” which will be released on May 20.
