GWAR vocalist David Brockie died of an accidental heroin overdose the Virginia coroner’s office revealed to the media earlier today.
In an E-mail, Arkuie Williams, medical examiner administrator of the office, Brockie died of “acute heroin toxicity and the manner of death is accident.”
Brockie, 50, was found dead on March 23 at his Richmond home. He rose to prominence with GWAR by shocking the public with his grotesque costume and extravagant live performances. His onstage persona, Oderus Urungus, was a 43 billion year-old alien whose face was highly disfigured and horns that stuck out.
The surviving members of GWAR have created the David Brockie Fund in his honor. According to their official website, the foundation promotes the “advancement of music and performance in the arts, encouraging promising talents who have trouble with funding through mainstream channels.”
Currently, GWAR will continue to perform as they'll make an appearance at Riot Fest & Carnival in Chicago in September.
