NEW YORK—The NYPD is running an anonymous gun buyback program this Saturday, Aug. 10, at a church in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park South.

People who turn in operable handguns and assault riffles will be given a $200 bankcard, and people who turn in riffles and shotguns will be given a $20 bankcard.

The dropoff site, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, will be open 10am to 4pm.

Guns should be placed in a plastic or paper bag, or a box, and transported in the trunk of your car.

People can turn in as many guns as they want, but will only receive payment for up to three guns.

Past or present law enforcement officers and gun dealers are not eligible to participate in the program.

Firearm violence rates are still quite high in certain areas of New York City, including Crown Heights, East New York, Central Harlem, and the South Bronx, according to an April report from the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

Deaths from the use of firearms in New York City dropped between 2000 and 2011, from 524 to 366.
