In 2014 Grand Am’s Rolex Sport Car Series will merge with the American Le Mans Series, finally creating a single North American sports car series after 13 years of inter-series competition.
Hopefully the new series will unite the fervent fan base of ALMS with the corporate and financial stability and promotional power of Grand Am’s corporate owner, NASCAR, creating a new Golden Age of sports car racing.
Since the official announcement of the NASCAR buyout in early September, fans of both series have been looking forward to a follow-up announcement about the details of the new series: what will the class structure be? Will any classes from the two existing series be continued? When and where will the new series race?
Equally important because it affects image and marketing: What will the new series be called?
Starting Tuesday Nov. 20, Grand Am has invited fans of the series to submit their ideas in the “Name the Future” contest. Fans who submit suggestions earn a chance to win a VIP trip for two to either the ALMS 61st Twelve Hours of Sebring or Grand Am’s 51’st Rolex 24 at Daytona.
The trip includes airfare and hotel accommodations, and may also include a hot lap around the track with a celebrity driver, a tour of the paddock and pit lane, pit access, access to the drivers’ meeting, a visit to the starter’s stand, and access to Victory Lane.
Entrants must be 18 years of age and agree to the official contest rules, and entries must be submitted by Dec. 31. Visit NameTheFuture.com for details.
