Pennsylvania Republican gubernatorial candidate Doug Mastriano warned this weekend of October “suppression polls” designed to reduce turnout during the 2022 midterms.

While Mastriano did not cite any specific polls for Pennsylvania’s races in 2022, he told Newsmax that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis—who is backing his election campaign—warned him weeks ago.

“DeSantis in August when he came here to campaign for me in Pittsburgh, he’s like, ‘Doug, stay away from the polls in October, because they’re going to show you behind,’ just like they showed him behind,” Mastriano told the outlet. “This time last year they had [Virginia GOP Gov. Glenn] Youngkin, there was no chance he was going to win in Virginia.”

Mastriano said that he is not seeing signs of trailing Democrat candidate Josh Shapiro in his own internal poll numbers.

“It’s kind of weird; what we’re seeing on on the ground is record crowds, and in fact, Rasmussen says they’re projecting Pennsylvania is going to break plus-five Republican,” Mastriano continued. “That’s more like we’re seeing. My own, we’re looking like more plus R-9.”

A recent poll carried out by the Trafalgar Group shows Mastriano is trailing Shapiro by about 10 percentage points.

Further, the Republican candidate asserted that the crowds attending his events are large.

“Never before have this been happening, you know, in a gubernatorial race,” Mastriano said. “Wherever I go, our crowds are actually growing. Meanwhile, my opponent can’t draw flies. He'll go to a city and have a dozen people show up.”

One of the chief pollsters with the Trafalgar Group, Robert Cahaly, told the Daily Wire that Republican voters might be undercounted again, noting recent trends seen in 2016 and 2020.

“These submerged voters aren’t answering polls, they aren’t putting stickers on their cars, or signs in their yard—they’re not even posting on social media,” Cahaly said in a Daily Wire podcast. “They are underwater. They’re not saying a word to anybody until election day.”

Cahaly, whose Trafalgar Group issued a poll (pdf) showing Mastriano is trailing Shapiro by about 10 percentage points, said that voters shouldn’t trust most polls.

“Polls have two purposes,” he said. “They’re either to reflect the electorate, or they’re to affect the electorate—and too many of these media and university-based polls are designed to affect the electorate and are trying to create a false narrative quite often when there’s not one.”

The Epoch Times has contacted Shapiro’s campaign for comment.  The Pennsylvania governor’s election will be held on Nov. 8.
