Ann Rutherford, who played a small role in the 1939 classic Gone with the Wind, died at age 94 on Monday night at her home in Beverly Hills following a series of heart problems, her close friend and fellow actress Anne Jeffreys told the Los Angeles Times.
While her role as Scarlett O'Hara’s younger sister Carreen was one of the most enduring, Rutherford also starred as Polly Benedict on the big screen of the 1930s and 1940s in the long-running Andy Hardy series and on “The Bob Newhart Show” as Newhart’s character’s mother-in-law.
As Rutherford became one of the last surviving cast members of the beloved Civil War epic, she made a second career out of attending festivals featuring Gone with the Wind.
Vivien Leigh, who played Scarlett O'Hara, died in 1967. Evelyn Keyes, who played the middle sister, Suellen, died in 2008.
Born in the western Canadian city of Vancouver, Rutherford was the daughter of John Rutherford, a former New York Metropolitan Opera tenor, and Lucille Mansfield, a silent film actress. The family moved to Los Angeles when Rutherford was 9.
Rutherford is survived by one of her two daughters, Gloria May, who lives in San Francisco, and two grandsons, Jeffreys told CNN.
