Governor General David Johnston and his wife, Sharon, are attending the Olympic Summer Games in London, England, from July 25 to July 30, and will represent Canada at the opening ceremonies on July 27.
At the Canadian Olympic Team Welcoming Ceremony at the Olympic Village in London on July 25, they met with Canadian athletes and attended the official raising of the Canadian flag.
Johnston said he and Mrs. Johnston “were overwhelmed with a great sense of pride” as they sang the national anthem with the athletes.
“We truly felt like we, along with all Canadians, were part of the Canadian Olympic Team. In that moment, we witnessed the magic of the Games and its power to bring Canadians together to celebrate who we are as a country,” he said in a statement.
