FORT MEYERS, Fla.—Glass artist Renata Vigoda says on her website, “The inspiration for my work comes from my love of vibrant colors.” So naturally, she and her friend Jan Dolan were delighted when New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts took the stage, April 24, in brilliant-colored costumes.

It was the first time theatergoers in the City of Palms had the opportunity to enjoy Shen Yun’s rendition of 5,000 years of Chinese culture—traditions and values that were nearly lost under 60 years of communist rule. Shen Yun Performing Arts International Company, one of Shen Yun’s three touring companies, performed to a full house both nights.

“The costuming is just spectacular—the way they mix the colors and combine them,” said Ms. Vigoda, whose own artistic process begins with color selection.

The Shen Yun website states that its costume artists “use bright colors to tailor and recreate hundreds of new pieces each season.” “The designers stress harmonic balance and contrast. Their objective is an authentic presentation of the attire that comes from China’s divinely inspired traditional culture, and a consummate stage effect.”

Ms. Vigoda’s friend Ms. Dolan, a physician’s assistant in private practice, enjoyed Shen Yun’s stories, describing them as culturally interesting, educational, and visually spectacular.

Both women expressed their joy in watching the dancing. Ms. Dolan said they had been talking about the athleticism combined with the delicacy of the dancers. “This is really lovely,” she said.

“Chinese dance is at the heart of what Shen Yun does. Known for its incredible flips and spins, and its gentle elegance, it is one of the most rigorous and expressive art forms in the world,” the company’s website states.

“It’s just elegant. Visually—absolutely glorious,” Ms. Vigoda said.

“Many of my friends at work are very eager to hear my input tomorrow because they wish they had gotten tickets,” Ms. Dolan said.
